Hi everyone thanks in advance for any help you maybe able to offer. I have a 1976 70 hp Johnson that I can not get to shift into forward from the control box. It will shift manually just fine. I have replaced the shift cable already with a new one. It will shift into reverse just fine but as soon as you shift into reverse I can not get it to shift from reverse to neutral/forward. Its almost as if the control box will push the cable backward but will not pull it forward. If anyone can offer any advice on this issue it would be greatly appreciated as this is the only thing that has stopped me from being able to get on the water this year, and the crappie are really starting to hit in my area.

Time to inspect the control box.----And is it the original 1976 model control box or a newer one.------Sure sounds like there is an issue inside the box.----Should be easy to determine what is wrong here.-----Your assistant is turning the propeller during all this shifting ?

Yes the propeller functions properly as it should in forward neutral and reverse. Could it possibly be the cable guides? Was thinking guides or the dog gear that is inside the control box.

The part number to the cable is CC17006 length is 8ft. That dog gear I was referring to is actually called the remote control shift lever. When I get home this evening I can take a picture of the control box and post it here if that helps. I not sure how to make any adjustments to the shift rod height to be honest. This is my first boat with a bigger motor I've alway had my little jon boat with a little 14 hp and finally upgraded this winter.
