Took my 1990 rinker v 190 4.3 out today it ran fine on the way out seemed to be a little hot when running at no wake speed on the way back in still ran hot but the it started to die it would start back after a few cranks and go for a few seconds and die again rinse and repeat then it was like the battery died and it would just click once and nothing checked the voltage was good set for a minute started right up long enough to make it back to the dock any clue where I should start was it the temperature causing it to die and just click and not start back

If the motor was running hot, you may have killed it
How hot is hot? Anything over 180 means you have an issue.

When was the last time you serviced the impeller and did a drive service?

Its pretty hot at low speed but it cools off when you get some speed can see water pumping through thought it may be a thermostat issues there just didn't know if it would affect it running

Pull the drive and address your impeller

Overheating is a lack of water flow

On the back of the boat is the stern drive unit ('drive'/'leg'). You need to remove that, split it into its 2 parts and you'll find a water pump. The pump is an impeller type, and the impeller needs to be replaced at regular intervals, (for your drive, 3 years maximum). I suspect you might have run the engine out of the water without flushers/ear-muffs on and cooked the impeller (it's rubber).

Plenty of useful videos (and other information) in the stickies

Or based on what the op is saying, it's never been serviced. Btw, does Merc have a recommended service interval?

For a Gen II impeller, 3 years. For an MC1 through to Alpha One, it's annual.

@Wphillips36 . . . Welcome to iBoats (and boat ownership in general it seems)

The cooling system is the suspect at this point. Assuming that you have an Alpha drive the raw water pump (aka impeller) is in the outdrive. (Bravo drives use a raw water pump connected to the engine).

It is always good to know that you have a working sea water pump and that the cooling system is not clogged or any such thing.

It also sounds like you have a leak at either the 'recirculating' pump or the thermostat housing. Which may not be the source of the problem, but will need fixing.

Post up some pictures of your engine and the serial number as well, for additional guidance.
