63 Evinrude 10 hp jumps out of gear

This is my first post, so I hope I'm doing this right. I love my Evinrude but she'll jump out of gear at high speed, like hitting a log. I pulled the lower and replaced the forward gear and clutch dog, adjusted the shifter so that both forward and reverse have the same "throw". After further investigation, I found that the shifter (when the shifter detent is disengaged) has more room to move both forward and reverse. This tells me the clutch dog is not engaging fully into either gear. I inspected the connection between the lower shift rod and the upper rod and all was tight. It's like - if the shift rod were a bit longer, it would then engage fully. Am I missing something here?

You say the shift rod connection is tight. But are the shift rods correctly seated in the connector?

The shift rods should be inserted into the clamp so that the screws are located in the grooves in the rods

Very common problem that occurs and worsens with wear of the upper shift lever parts. Verify by attempting to move the shift rod up and down (at the connector). Excessive movement indicates wear up above. OR the inner shift lever is loose on the shifter lever shaft. Powerhead removal is necessary if you want to examine it further.

Minor wear can be compensated for by adjusting the lever to favor forward gear.
