I have a A1G2 upper housing that sustained some damage from the gears grenading. I'm having trouble driving in the upper housings lower race. Other than putting the housing in the sun and the race in the freezer, then measure the depth on all sides as I drive it in, does anyone have a suggestion for driving the race in straight? Machining a piece of aluminum that will fit the bore and sit on the bearing driver?

Manual shows just using the standard bearing cup driver. What are you using?

A generic bearing cup driver. 75.xx mm

I've tried it both the normal way and up side down. Both ways wanted to tilt in the bore.

I'm favoring replacing the case with a good used unit because of the previous damage and possible out of round bore from the gears letting go. I haven't any bore gauges or I would have.

When you lay the race in with just your hands, does it try to tilt?
If it does then may be out or round. Could also try to take a round file or triangle scrapper to cut just the top edge off

Might try the race in the freezer for a few hours, probably give it enough to help

AD has some good thoughts measure the race with calipers, alternatively if you have access to a machine shop have them measure the housing might clean up easily

That is kind of hard to say now as the race cocked in the hole leaving a slight ridge in the side of the bore. Before I initially started it was rough getting the bearing race/cup started because of the damage that was immediately above the old race. The old race came out what I would consider fairly hard but it did come out and the bore it self looked ok.

The shim tool fits the bore rather tight. It's not like you can easily turn it while in place which I don't thing is right either. With that said, I think it best to get a good used housing and send the old one to the giant melting pot in the sky.

Bought a used upper housing. It has had some damage from gear failure but nothing like my old one has. The outside looks nice and the reason I considered it above more expensive ones. Bearing cup area looked good. We'll soon see if I made the right choice.

Need to measure and install the proper shims. Do you have the service manual?

I've also had a chance to look into it a lot longer than you.

I've purchased all new bearings, races, seal kits, gears and what not else for it. I've even went so far as to purchase a used 20 ton H.F shop press and a used slide hammer set.

Received the replacement upper housing today. The lower race came out like I would have expected it to. Quite unlike the original which I had to slam repeatedly while standing on the housing.

One question. Do the lower seals sit back to back ((opposing)? That's the way these came out.

I have both style replacement seals. Two the same size and the later 98? One piece double lip seal.
