1972 Evinrude V4 100hp Selectric issues

I have keep having an issue on this motor shutting off that is drying me insane. I finally got it running by cleaning/rebuilding the carbs and replacing the power pack, but now when I even breath on the throttle lever it dies. This happens whether in gear or not. And I can’t even see the cable move at all before it dies. I can rev it just fine right that the carbs. I’m not the most experienced in outboards, and not at all with this Selectric setup. Does anyone in here have more experience with these motors?

Time to look inside the control box for loose wire or bare wires.----Motor actually sounds pretty good.------But avoid revving it in neutral as that is not good for bearings and such.

Did you sync the Carbs to each other, and to the Ignition Advance?
It sounds ok on the Muffs, but you need to have the boat in the the water so the Engine experiences the real operation world.
Idle Speed needs to be set on the water, with engine in forward gear. Don't try setting the Idle Speed via the Carbs, those are supposed to Fully Closed at Idle.

It looks like you have the cover off the control and something hot-wired to the battery or something. What's that all about?

Cover was off the controls to see what was happening when it shut off. In the process of replacing all the boat wiring, so wires from the outboard and control box are wired directly to the battery for testing.

Have not synced or tuned yet, going through basic checks before putting her on the water for that. Would like to know she will stay running before all that.

Yeah I was poking around a bit in there, but didn’t want to go full on tearing it apart without knowing a little more about what I’m dealing with. I have Seloc manual, but not enough detail about the Selectric system in there for me to accurately diagnose wiring issues.

The selectric refers to the shifting.----12 volts to green for neutral.----12 volts to green and blue for reverse.

Unless it is Tuned, and the link and sync is part of a Tune Up, You may just be like a Dog chasing its own Tail

What’s bewildering is that the small movement of the throttle lever you see in the video isn’t even enough to move any of the throttle cables or linkages. Which is why I keep going back to the control box. The only electronics in the box are the selector switch, a blocking diode, and hot alarm. Would anyone of those cause it to shut off like that?

Take a Picture of the control box with the Cover removed. As you know there are moving Parts in there as well as wires, the moment you moved the Go Go Lever, the engine died. Check for any movement or touching of wires to the Lever, Cable, or Housing
