hot Coil

hi , new,guy here, just bougth a canadventure with a volvo aq145 and after the first run i noticed the coil is hot, checked it after it sat for a couple hrs still hot ,next day still hot
now this boat has issues and im trying to work them out , wiring was nasty , corroded and so forth , ive cleaned alot up but still a work i progress the wiring schmatic i found for this engine doesnt really match up to my set up , i have a wire comming offpositive coil and going to dist, - side of coil has two wires one going to igniton and the other i presume tach , this coil says no ext resister required , thought on if its wired correct ?

coils do get warm, about 175 or so. which is too warm to put your hand on.

if you have points, there should be a resistor

Shouldn't be hot after sitting not running for a day I'm thinking ,my coil looks newish and says no external resister required,maybe incorrect coil?
Is a resister just a thinner wire in the lead going to the dist ? Look like this?

Uh WHUT?? "hot after sitting not running for a day" If so it's very simple. Something is mis wired or defective causing the coil to get power when not running. A non resistor coil and points ignition is incredibly simple............Battery ------wiring to key switch-----to coil------to distributor----through points to ground, and condenser is across points to ground

No the resistor usually goes on the power side, not the distributor wire. It can be an in harness wire (typically GM/ Ford automotive) or a ceramic block resistor made for purpose (Mopar)

this means that there is power to your coil. did you leave the key on, or did someone mis-wire the boat?

no key on , wiring could be miswired from po, it wasa bit of a mess under the console i got that cleaned up some now imlooking into the coil possible issue if you look at the first post i describe the coil wiring , now after research it seems it is wired incorrectly, the po wired the positive side of the coil to the dist should that not go to the ign?

Depends on battery ground. Neg ground battery = NEG coil terminal to distributor. As I said earlier if it is getting hot, it is miswired, or bad ignition switch, something of that nature.
