Volvo dp-sm outdrive lower stuck

I am in the process of exchanging my SX-m lower (on my boat) with the lower assembly of a dp-sm outdrive which I have on a stand in the garage. I have removed the 4 nuts and two bolts on the dp-sm outdrive needed to drop the lower, but the two halves will not seem to separate. I’ve tried tapping with a rubber mallet while I have the entire outdrive slightly suspended from a eye bolt screwed into the oil dipstick hole. I have liberally sprayed “aero kroil” penetrating oil on the areas where the lower separates from the upper assembly. So far, no luck. It hasn’t budged in the slightest. It should be noted that the dp-sm outdrive was from a trailer boat that was used in saltwater and the front prop was stuck on the prop shaft so badly that I had to cut it off (from saltwater). Any suggestions????

welcome aboard.

most likely the 4 studs are corroded in the holes

you will need more than just an eye bolt in the dipstick hole to hang it.

maybe bolt it back onto the boat, then use a leather faced mallet. once you get the halves to start to move, you can drive plastic wedges in between

OK. I actually have the outdrive assembly suspended from the eyeball screwed into the dipstick threads. I also have the lower unit resting atop a outdrive stand that I made. I went and purchased a couple of dead blow hammer’s to help with the

Sorry, phone rang and cut me off mid response. I got the dead blow hammer‘s to help persuade the lower off. I also got four nuts that were the same thread pitch as the nylock nuts holding the lower to the upper. I screwed the nuts on to the studs and then stacked washers underneath them. That way, I can back the nuts out of the studs and they will press a top the washers pushing the lower down. I was able to get about an eighth of an inch gap in the front, but the rear hasn’t budged yet. I will try the plastic wedge idea. Thank you

Well, finally got the upper and lower separated. The trick was getting the small gap between the upper and lower units by using the nuts on the upper assembly studs to push down on washers and force the lower unit down. Once I was able to get the small gap started, a hose down with penetrating oil, and forcing plastic prybar’s in to the gap, allowed to separate the units. I attached a picture on how are used the upper assembly studs with nuts and washers to push the lower assembly down. Maybe this will help someone else out. Thanks again

and when you hit the drive with your hammer and tear the threads out of the casting....... then what.

remount the drive. you need leverage.
