Newbie here so i don't have all the terms down pat but will try.I have a mercruiser 140 with Alpha 1 gen 1 drive.Shifts into forward and neutral is good but won't shift into reverse..Engine cuts out before even trying to go into reverse from the switch as roller is way up top instead of in the middle where it is suppose to be.Tried to adjust shift cable as manual says.Forward no problem.I unhooked cable and pulled cable while turning prop but prob will only click and will not lock.Only way i can get it to lock is tap arm mechanism under bell housing.

If you can get it to lock manually under the bell, then atleast all your stern components are intact. It sounds like you just are not adjusting the shift cable correctly. What are your idle RPM's?

Re: mercruiser won't lock into reverse

was hoping or thinking it might not be the cable because i can pull the end of the cable as hard as i can with the cable off the lever assembly.Could it be the lever or the slide mechanism that the cable is attached to?I have to hit that lever pretty hard with a screwdriver and hammer just to get it to lock the prop.Should the lever that goes to the bottom end be pointing straight ahead in forward gear?

Very old post I know 😅. But wondering if you ever figured out the issue? I’m having exact problem, even after replacing shift cable and quadruple checking both upper and lower cable adjustments..
