Motor is a Sea King (I know its not a Jonny-Rude, But...) and was rebuilt some 20 or more years ago and has sat garaged for the last 15. I've got it up and running well and had it out today for a test run. Upon returning it to the trailer, I noticed a light creamy mocha colored streak of oil coming from the two lower end mounting bolts on the starboard side. I assumed a lower end seal job was warranted (water intrusion forcing foamy oils out the input shaft seal or some such). When I got home, I drained the lower oil and it looked new. No water whatsoever in the lower end.

I don't remember, ever seeing a light creamy mocha colored oil in or around the lower end that wasn't water intrusion and needing attention to the seals.

I'm confused, can someone shed some light on what I'm seeing?

Thanks

I'm not exactly sure what bolts you are speaking of. However, back then they didn't worry about dumping oil in the lake. You most likely are seeing oil that you put in the gas. No, it doesn't all burn. Some goes out the exhaust, where it mixes with spent cooling water and emulsifies. Different oils, carb settings, speeds, and temperatures all affect how much of the stuff you see, if any.

The bolts are those that hold the lower end on. If I recall, there are 3 on each side of the case (5/16" ish) and one forward opposite the propellor (3/8" I think). I find a couple of things odd, I realize these bolts aren't "sealed" and the case they screw into is basically just an spacer and exhaust chamber, but I wouldn't expect to see oil leaking from the bolt heads, and the oil looks emulsified like one would expect from the gearing in the lower end. I realize not all the oil is burned in combustion but I don't recall seeing it weeping out like this before (I'ver had many 2 stroke motors over the years), in an "emulsified" state. Guess I'll pull the lower end off this weekend and see if all looks ok, maybe replace the impellor while I'm at it.

You might find something but overall that's normal....sometimes grayish emulsified oil and water and sometimes black slightly burnt unburnt oily looking 2 stroke fuel.

People write in all the time saying "Hey, what's this ......"
There are as even a recent post from a guy that had it all over his intake and carb. Everyone had an opinion on that one....all seems true to.

Different conditions related to fuel used, oil content, water temp....you name it.

Those bolts thread into the exhaust housing. There's no gear oil in there. Only exhaust, water, and discharged fuel/oilPg 35E-10 Gearcase.jpg

Hey...many of those old Sea Kings were made by the JonnyRude people, had a few myself back in the day. I can well remember the tan colored goo seeping out of the nooks and crannies from excess oil in the exhaust. Todays better oils dont leave as much residue being clean, green and all.. Just keep an eye on the gear case oil to make sure there is no water intrusion and you should be good to go !!! If ya have any pics of the old girl, post em, might well bring back some fond memories !!!
