Looking for outboard mechanic in south nj

I have an older evinrude 88hp spl late between 80s early 90s. No one wirkz on older outboards anymore. Anyway, it just slams harder than usual when shifting into R. Or F. It runs great besides that. Can anyone help me out here i bought this boat 2 yrs ago and can’t use it because im worried about this

Slamming into gear…
1. Cable adjustment
2. Idle set too high
3. Trying to slowly put boat in gear. Needs to be quick and deliberate for lack of a better word
