I have a new to me 1977 evinrude 35 hp longshaft remote control model. Appears to have very low hours. I bought it cheap. Compression comes in at 120 psi on both cylinders. Gear oil looked good when drained. Has spark on both cylinders but needs a new wiring harness as the insulation is crumbling off the wires. I found a new harness on ebay. The motor has the older style coils currently. Will the newer style coils that are all plastic work on this motor? Should I just leave the original coils in place since they both sparked? This year outboard is an oddball in that the lower unit uses a front water inlet on the housing. I feel like this outboard is too nice to part out. I know I'll need to replace all the fuel hoses and rebuild the carb with new gaskets. Lower unit passed a pressure test so other than installing a new water pump I guess I'm good there. Am I wasting my time or do you guys think this motor should be put back into service ? I only paid 150 for this outboard. Opinions welcome and if you have anything to add for resurrecting this old girl let me know. Thank you

Nice looking motor that doesn't look like it has been overheated. Overheating was a big problem here in Florida's weedy lakes. Weeds would block the water intakes. Good motors other than that.
If it suits your needs, fix it up and run it.

Thank you. Am I able to use muffs to run this? The water intakes aren't in the usual location

I haven't dropped the lower unit yet but going by parts diagrams there are no gaskets needed for the plate and pump housing? metal to metal for these? can someone confirm if that is accurate?

Didn't have your exact model number but I believe this is it. Updated part number with gaskets.

Original aluminum pump, replaced by plastic pump with stainless steel liners. Can't tell which is in there without looking.

Again, you have to know which kind you have before ordering parts.

I'll be dropping the lower unit soon but I bet the original pump is in there still. Paint isn't chipped at all on the lower unit mounting boots and 1/2 inch nut

The motor may well have sat for 30 years.----At any rate most motors should have a new impeller every 5 years.

Got the lower unit off. There was corrosion in the upper parts of the lower unit probably due to mice. Anyway it has a 4 bolt metal housing no gaskets. I did find some white rtv silicone looking stuff lightly applied to the underside of the plate. Impeller wasn't as bad as suspected but obviously do for a replacement. Was glad to see no broken off fins to clog up passages. Enjoy
