Wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction. The starter rooe pulls out maybe a foot plus with no resistance before it grabs the flywheel. If I jerk the handle a few times first it seems better. Any known parts to check for this condition?

Pull the recoil and you will see some Pawls on the bottom. Cleaning and possible adjustments should get it working correctly.

to work good some of the older engines have markings on the recoil base which must line up... I do not know if it is the same for a 55 recoil but check for bars and an arrow asin this picture.

when the rope is rewound the arrow must line up with the bars

Folks sometimes grease everything that moves.------On recoil starters some parts are not to be greased.
