I am going to be looking at a “rough” 1997 Fisher Hawk 170, the boat has a full windshield. The current owner started to tear out aluminum panels, tore up some carpet, took off the bow cap and one end cap on the stern. I’m told it is just dirty but all the original parts and pieces are there. It also has a 1997 Force 120 which he showed a video of it starting on starter fluid. Price is $1300.

I think that I will be able to put all the pieces back together but I have never done a restoration. I just want it back to the original look. I am pretty handy at fixing things and I think I have the ability to do it, but I am just cautious because I haven’t done it before.

What should I be looking for when I look at the boat ie. This part is there etc? I know I want to check for weld cracks on these boats what else? I only plan on doing the bare minimum to this at first just to make sure it floats, runs and is useable before I might fix more.

Just for the record you have there a total rehab.
Cap off, all glass over wood removed, new transom, new stringers/bulkheads, new floor, flotation foam, paint/gelcoat, electrical wiring, upholstery, fuel related components.
It can be done and a lot of great guys here to help you get it done properly.

How do you know it needs a new transom? I’m assuming all the aluminum subframe would not need to be replaced just inspected. The paint I don’t care about gravel roads around here take it off anyways. I agree with electrical, upholstery, fuel and probably the foam. I have done plenty of boat electrical, the fuel is simple, upholstery is not hard, I haven’t done foam but I have done some research into it.

Probably wood in the transom and other wood in the structure, all will need replaced!! You definetly will have your work cut out. Motor is worth pocket change only if it runs! Could easily be a 3K overhaul if you do all the work yourself. Not sure where you are, but in my neck of the woods that wouldn't even bring 1000 even if the motor ran...not sure parts are even availiable anymore. I would do lots of research and get some estimates before you consider it!!

I’m in Montana. I have checked for parts for that engine most are available. I am definitely not going to offer more than $1000 for it, I figure if I can get it running first then I would mess with anything else. I’m guessing if I salvage the aluminum I can get $500 for the boat and maybe $200 for the trailer.
