Hello all
Brand new here and I don’t know a heck of a lot about outboard engines. What I have is a 4006E that my brother in law gave me. Overall it’s pretty clean but it has very little compression. My harbor freight compression gauge says 25 psi on the bottom cylinder and even less on the top cylinder. I think it needs new rings. I rebuilt the carburetor already and cleaned the points. I can’t find rings though. Any idea where I could find some? I will be putting it on a 1957 Alumacraft FD-14. Thanks in advance,
Mike.

I would start with trying another gauge to confirm those numbers. Any idea when the last time was ran?

No my brother in law bought it at a flea market about 15 years ago. I had it running in a barrel last summer but it wouldn’t rev up and the water was full of black sludge.

It would not run with those compression numbers.====Remove cylinder head and have a look.---Could be a blown head gasket.-----Look at the model # again.

Does not look like rings are available at the dealer ?----E-Bay likely has a vendor with some on the shelf.

I would say this motor has a blown head gasket.----Easy fix.----Head will be warped.---True it up.----Replace gasket.----Go fishing.

Thanks for all the help fellas! I’ll take the head off and check it out. For some reason I did not suspect the head gasket but it could be! I will make sure to report back.
Thanks,
Mike

and all that black goo in a barrel is normal !! 2 strokes spit out a good % their fuel oil mix down the exhaust and washes out carbon deposits along with it....which is why they are forbidden on some lakes. Modern direct injection engines do not mix oil gas and run much cleaner.

the 4006e being a 1970 4hp... are easy to fix . suggest you look into redoing all the electricals not just points.... and look very closely for cracked coils (not expensive) and change condensers. lots of good utubes/articles to help you

There is no way that this engine could run to wear out the rings to less than 25 PSI.-----An owner would know there is something WRONG.----A head gasket fails suddenly.

sometimes the head gasket blows just at the junction between the 2 cylinders causing both PSI readings to fail.

No luck yet…still working on it. I sanded the head down and put in a new head gasket on it. Slight increase in cylinder pressure. I haven’t tried to run it yet.

just run it with a big dose of engine cleaner, seafoam, POwer tune whatever....

see what happens remeasure compression with a good meter (no long hoses)

Agreed
Anything with a gauge on it from harbor freight is suspect in my eyes. I admit I have a few HB tools but wouldn’t trust anything that needs to be accurate to be accurate.
