Hello,

This engine came with the boat, the motor is in good shape overall, and out of the water the prop spins just fine. However, when in the water, in forward or reverse, it kicks in for a few seconds and moves the boat slightly, and then the prop stops spinning.

I have drained the oil completely and replaced it with the proper oil for the engine, I also pulled things apart to an extent, and the clutch dog seemed like it was in good condition.

I don't think its a solenoid issue as it is shifting into gears properly, and from my understanding even if it wasn't it would default into forward gear.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Correct it is spring loaded to go into forward.----Test run with another prop.-----Or the bore for the shift piston is not smooth / clean.-----Could be debris preventing clutch dog from going fully into forward.

He said he used the proper oil.-----And no with regular 90 weight oil it would still shift smoothly into forward gear !!

What about shifting out of gear? It was speced for Type C which is less Viscous. And yes. I know that Type C was the only Oil Marketed by OMC during the years of the Hydroelectric Gearcases

I have replaced the prop with a rebuilt one from a local reputable shop, I guess ill have to check the bore

I am very familiar with these units.----Have a few of them for parts / rebuild.----I would bet the shift piston bore is not in good shape.-----Mayne the oil pump and filter screen need to be inspected as well.---It will shift with #90 weight oil in it.

I have two of these motors. One looked cleaner and had about 120 psi x 3 so that's the one I picked to get working. I had a similar situation. Got out on the water and it moved a little bit in gear but not much. After disassembling the gear box I found the tabs on the forward gear that rotate the oil pump were all broken off. Thankfully the other motor gears were fine.

The prop looked good, no apparent strikes. Can this happen if you were to go from forward gear to reverse suddenly? That has me super careful when I shift to make sure I am slowing first and pressing Neutral between F and R.

These units shift very fast, but slamming it Directly from Forward to Reverse and Back at higher than Idle speed will increase wear on the Clutch Dog Teeth and corresponding areas on the Gears, just like it will on any Mechanical Shift unit. As for the Tabs on the Forward Gear that drive the Pump, as the pump is always coupled to the Forward Gear, the only time unusual strain is placed on Tabs is when the Pump is starved of Oil, and then receives a jolt of it.

That makes sense. It has been a few years now but I do recall exchanging oil pumps with the donor motor. I still have that one in the garage.
