Hey guys I just picked up a bass boat with a 92 40hp johnson model # VJ40TLENM. The guy I got it from ran straight gas no mix through it and ran it for about two hours. My question 1. Isn’t it supposed to take 50:1 mix? 2. Is the outboard toast?

Welcome to iboats

I suspect that engine has an Oil Mixing System, and the Oil is kept in a Separate Tank. I also doubt an Engine requiring the use of Premixed Gas, would have lasted 2 hours if run without Oil

Would you know where the oil reservoir would be located?

So it seems that my suspicion was correct and someone did the vro delete on this outboard hence the fuel pump and cut oiler line.

They did the correct bypass.----But you need to [post the compression number here.-----If someone ran it for 2 hrs on straight gas it will result in many tear drops.-----Will take many beer tokens to correct.

Update! Compression was 2 ticks above 120 on both cylinders and consistent. I ended up draining the fuel and noticed it was blue. Turns out it had half a tank of mixed gas from the 2nd to last owner and the guy I got it from put straight gas in to fill it the rest of the way up. Tweaked the carb and throttle and got it to run good. Just lots of smoke.
