I’m wondering if a omc 2.3l can be replaced with the omc cobra 5.0 and if it is a easy swap?
Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance

It ‘could’ however you wouldn’t want to. The 2.3L was only used by OMC and for only a couple years, not even considering it’s like 110 hp vs, somewhere around 200hp depending

So you think the 2.3 is enough to yank the kids around on a tub. I have to rebuild the engine and didn’t know if I should just get the 5.0

yes, however you would need a complete 5.0, and appropriate drive to replace everything pulley to prop.

the 2.3 was used almost 40 years ago. is the boat structurally sound enough for a repower?

It was barely used and sat in a barn for 15 yrs and everything seems sound.

you may want to check closer.

I have never found a boat with a 2.3 that didnt have rot issues.

No-one lets a good boat sit

you still need a drive. the 2.3 liter has the wrong gearing for a 5.0. plus you need the correct transom assembly.

you need to change everything from the front pulley to the propeller

Ok I appreciate the info. It sat in a barn covered do to a cracked block. Wife’s family thought it would be ok and let it sit during winter and the next summer it was blowing water out the side of the engine. I got another block for it and have started the process of a rebuild just was curious about a swap instead.
