Just brought home a '71 9.5hp Johnson that I hope to fix up, test & use at my cottage.
It seems to be complete, has good compression, spark in both cylinders. I haven't tried to start it yet--i don't have the correct fuel connector on hand.
2 things I need to address:
1 - the stop switch needs to be replaced due to the insulation crumbling away to reveal badly corroded copper wires. These things go for stupid money and I don't see any reason not to use a universal replacement for less than $10. I'm considering replacing it with a more modern switch & lanyard type. Anyone do that before?
2 - is there a 'solid state' replacement for the points? This is the oldest motor I've yet tinkered with but I recall such modules being advertised for lawn mower engines back in the day. We're (are) they made for outboards?

The universal magneto is under the flywheel.-----It is a wonderfully simple set up.---Reliable / easy to repair.----Coils are cheaper than they were 50 years ago.----Some will argue.----There is no need to improve that unit.----It was installed from 1950 to 1990 models !

don't mess with the 50 year old design...

any "normally open" push switch can be used to kill the magneto by shorting the points... lots of them on amazon

Don't you think it's kind of a sexy idea to improve on the 50yo design by replacing the basic N.O. switch with a lanyard type that can do the same thing (if you pull the cord) AND offers an improvement in safety?

I'm ordering both types this morning. The lanyard switch appears to be long enough to extend out of the recess on the OB panel but if it doesn't I'll have the 'regular' button to install.

And as said--choking works fine, too 👍
