Hi there I’ve been watching this form for a long time and it has help me rebuild my 1971 Sangster Marine. I’ve got a 70 horse Johnson on it with the help of this forum. I was able to take apart the carburetters and rebuild them. I also was able to diagnose and replace a voltage regulator but now I come to you asking for help.
The other day I was out in the ocean and I noticed a weird smell. I turned off my engine and sniffed around when I got to the engine I realized there was a large piece of kelp covering each side of my water intake. So I took it off when I went to restart my engine. It did not start. I also have battery issues. I need a new battery, just haven’t got it yet. When I cranked over I could hear the hiss of steam.

I used our kicker motor to get us back to the dock and then load up and go home. When I got home, I noticed a milky fluid in the bottom cylinder when I took out the spark plugs, I haven’t tried starting at since. I am wondering what might cause an issue like this? Should I do a compression test?

motor model J70ELCIM

thank you for your time

How do I find out which one? headgasket should be simple. Are the exhaust ones tough? Where would you buy parts?

First check the compression in all cylinders.
If low or no compression in bottom cylinder you have a bad head gasket.
To pull the exhaust cover and check the gasket can be a PIA.
The bolts that holds the cover can snap really easy and you have to drill them out and retap the threads.

All three cylinders. I double checked them as well.
What do you think the issue could be now?

Check the gaskets at the exhaust cover, BUT be careful the bolts can snap really easy.
If they are hard to loosen penetrate with penetrating oil, heat them with a propane torch and tap them with a hammer.
Move them back and forth with small steps.
