I have a 1977 Johnson outboard motor and just replaced the fuel tanks with an Attwood fuel tank and fuel line and pump. The quick disconnect fitting doesn't plug in on the motor end as there is a tab that interferes with the plugging in the end that appears to be metal. Can this tab just be cut off? Why do you not want to use the correct fitting? You want to cut part of the motor away instead?

If you get an air leak into the fuel line, you can have running trouble.

Can you reuse the old fitting?

I could take the old quick disconnect end off the old gas line and use that on the new gas line, but didn't have any hose clamps that size at home. Just trying to save a trip to the store....
