1976 Johnson 6 hp no water coming out of exhaust

I decided to get a back up motor after not being to fish for several weeks due to problems with my 15. I bought this 6 hp long shaft for $100 and was told it wouldn’t pump. New water pump and still no water coming out of exhaust. Water pumps great from water pump to thermostat housing (see photo) there also isn’t a clog from the thermostat housing to the exhaust. I dumbed food colored water and it’s coming out well (see picture). The thermostat is missing, so I know it’s not stuck open or closed. Not sure of next step? I’m going to order a new thermostat and gasket for this motor.

I feel the same way. I I thought it might be either the upper (power head to brass tube) or lower (brass tube connects to water pump housing) water tubing grommet, but if those were melted/in poor shape motor would not pump like a geyser our of thermostat housing correct?

In theory. There is a chance there could be some rot in the water tube and you’re losing a bit of water on the way up. How did the pump housing and wear plate look? Any deep wear marks that could prevent good water flow? Pump housing seal looked good? Quality impeller?

Friend of mine just replaced the impeller, so I didn’t inspect things. He said impeller passed the bucket/drill test with flying colors. On full throttle I can get the water to shoot out thermostat housing a good 4 feet in the air, so it’s pumping like a champion.

Solved, tons of crud between the gasket and the top of thermostat housing!
