contact your local VP dealer. May want to also contact Raylar Marine. They used to play with the 8.1's 15 years ago.

Hi...likely that you've diagnosed the ecm to be the item at fault, no doubt...but is it worth me asking what the symptoms are, if that isn't the case ? It isn't unknown (unfortunately) or even uncommon for the ecm to be an easy to blame item when ideas or a level of ability from a dealer has been exhausted, often when the blame lies elsewhere, like a short or bad earth around the main harness or ancillary items and their circuitry.
Just thought I would mention it anyway.

Don't know why its needed but many times the 8.1 which uses the Ford IAC starts to draw to much current and burns the ECM. Known problem but no fix to keep it from happening

That's a good call. I have definitely read of such a thing previously AD. No means an expert on such things, but certainly aware and been witness to other ecu governed marine engines to have apparent ecu issues or suspected ecu issues, that are caused by or result in a short to earth somewhere in the associated circuitry. Alternatively, by water intrusion to the delicates of the ecu itself, causing a similar affect, byway of short circuit or earthing faults around the pins or components.
Most common symptom above all, I am aware of (across the board of marine engines and not specific to their make, type or origin), might be an injector or fuel delivery at injector problem. Something like one or more of the injectors staying open or having a confused signal voltage to them perhaps.
Anyway, I am no better than guessing or assuming, without knowing more. Just thought I would throw in my usual optimistic thinking to the mix. Just know that some guys are quick to blame an expensive and elusive ECU part, with the demand of replacement. When occasionally the issue lies elsewhere or can be resolved by a a wee bit of initiative thinking.

Should the issue actually lie within or around the ecu, I have even known it for these or similar controlling modules to have a fault resolved by simply replacing or repairing ribbons and or pins internally. Even a little soldering or drying out can do wonders......anyway...

Thanks for the response but I’m certain the ecm is the problem as the boat sank in salt water and the internals of the ecm are extremely corroded. I had the engine rebuilt and ran the boat for about a month with no issues then all these crazy symptoms started that lead me to the ecm I cracked it open and water poured out of it

Might be in the harness as well but try this.
Take soap, water and soft brush and scrub the unit real good. Then hang it in a box (cardboard, metal) with a 40 to 60 watt bulb. Leave it there for a few days to a week.

Use to do this working for the Navy. We would take all the weapon system circuit boards and do this to them before testing and repair

“Fixed”
A non functioning iPhone (got wet from sweat in my pocket doing a brake job when it was 100* out) by leaving it in my home A/C vent to dry it out. Worked fine & still does!

I sent the unit to a guy to rebuild and he said there isn’t anything left to fix

Don't remember if anyone has tried it but might figure out what it would take to go from VP to Merc

Seems without calling every marine service shop that you could locate to ask if they have an older take out engine sitting around, as time goby you may have to be creative in your online search’s such as looking for a parting out engine online or eBay your engine type ECM both with and without the part number as this part number is coming up obsolete in the VP part’s search system.

To get the Gev VII motor to run on a carb.

Get aftermarket intake. (Dart, World Products, etc.). Send out to get the intake epoxy lined or put a heat exchanger on the motor. Pull oil pump drive. Install SBC/BBC distributor. Slap on a 850cfm carb. Set base timing to 12BTDC. Go boating

If you want to make a lot more power, swap the cam as well
