Are aftermarket water pump repair kits for a Yamaha 40 0r 50hp worth buying?
My BIL had several vanes on his impeller come apart.
not sure but I think he had the pump replaced last year or maybe the year before.
was thinking they may have used an after market instead of OEM.
Last OEM I bought for my C40 was in 2021 for $39.
looking on line I see them around $60 plus shipping.
I see after market ones for Less that $20

If your a gambling man, then go for the cheap option. I have to much money, time, and effort in keeping my boat in excellent operating condition, so why skimp on 40 bucks?? Is that all your motor is worth ?

Most long time boaters will testify that cheap parts do not last as long as OEM.

I did not take any pics, and I did not bring it home with me.
I will try to remember to get some pics if he has not thrown it away already

I did mention that to him, but he said he never did that.

I know I have tilted the motor up while push poling the boat over shallow flats and forgot to tilt it back down when getting ready to leave,
the noise from the exhaust out of the water reminds me quickly to turn it back off and lower the motor.

Rubber bits run off a calendar, not the hour meter. So if the rubber part sat on a shelf for years, it may have been toast prior to installing

Also, for impeller parts, I like to get OEM parts (pump manufacturer preferably). For example, on my IO, I buy Johnson Pump impeller kits

never met a certified mechanic that could replace parts in the dark.
I can do a lot by feel if I cannot see what is needed.
but I was a certified automotive mechanic back in the 70s
