70 hp 2002/2003 Nissan NSD70A2

Engine has run like a dream for the last few years I’ve owned it. Now the lower cylinder compression is completely 100% gone. Appears, according to the Tohatsu mechanic, that they no longer offer these piston rings, and I don’t think he is willing to look elsewhere to find them. Does anyone else know where I can find a set?

Thanks!

Well the motor needs inspection.-----Remove cylinder head and see.-----Maybe needs a head gasket.
This is all coming directly from Tohatsu mechanic/dealer. He said they can rebuild it if I could find the rings. But they said that Tohatsu doesn’t sell them anymore and they don’t sound like they are going to do any searching. I’ve rebuilt a Johnson 70hp before and have done a lot of work myself. I have zero time to do it myself and I’m rebuilding/remodeling our house inside and out. So I’m just going to let them handle it and shell out the cash this time.

Perhaps a new motor in your future.-----Dealers like to sell new motors.
Yeah, well the whole setup cost me about $3000 so a new engine isn’t going to be an option. He said if I didn’t want to rebuild it, he does have a TLDI 50hp from same era that needs an air comp. But I have replaced and restored EVERYTHING on this 70hp EXCEPT for the pistons/rings.
I guess if the rings really aren’t available anywhere, then I may have no choice. But I’ve never bought anything new in my life really. Can’t stomach paying what new engines cost today. I’d probably buy another $250 engine laying on a field like I did this one!

A quick Internet search with the part numbers from the parts catalog… And I was able to find everything. So thanks anyway everyone!
