99 Volvo 5.0GL

Boat was running fine at the start of the season. I noticed a little dripping in the lower front of the engine suggesting a water pump needing to be replaced. Got the parts and replaced water pump. Getting to the three hex bolts I did turn the motor over several times to get to the hex bolts. I did this with both belts off and I’m now wondering if I affected the timing because now it is running rough. Runs fine at start up full throttle but then starts to bog and sputter out. Pull throttle back to 3-3500 rpm’s and you can feel the power go in and out. Almost like it’s not getting enough gas. Still runs but several times that same process repeats itself. Hatch was opened and it rained while working on it and wondered if water made its way in the carb. Wondering if Seafoam would cure it? So several possibilities going on here. Anyone here experience the same type thing going on?

Replacing the water pump will have no effect on the motor running unless something else was knocked loose or disconnected.

It could have an issue with water. If it was just a little bit of water the motor would burn that off in a short time. If it was more than that there could be an issue.

yep, nothing with either of the water pumps that would affect timing. You may have some water in the fuel, or you may have knocked something loose that is causing the issue. Start with an inspection of the area where you were working, and move on from there.

It bogs at WOT and then starts having problems. I'm thinking fuel supply issue. Things to check:
Dump fuel filter contents into clear container, see if there is only clear gas
Fuel pump pressure, 3-8 psi
Next is carb cleaning

Not on a Chevy 5 Liter
It’s a 99 Volvo, were they using Chevy motors that year or still Ford? They would have inherited Ford engines with the Cobra/SX drive around 1995-1996


ok, looks like the 5.0 Ford engine was all done by 1997... my bad, yeah, there is nothing in the area on a SBC that would cause issues, unless there is a wire loom for the alternator or some such.....

If I start having issues with a mechanical item after servicing that wasnt there before, I usually start where I was working.... usually I find something didnt like being disturbed.

So far I have replaced fuel filter and checked the distributor cap.
Yesterday when I took boat out it seems to start fine at first go after it has been sitting a while. After a bit though it starts bogging out. I also noticed something weird…at high throttle when bogging if I touch the trim up or down it back fires or pops a bit. Almost like it is an electrical issue. Wondering if water did something to the alternator would that have an effect on the engine running like that?

The quality of the ignition parts today is a Chinese joke on us. Convert the ignition to a Petronics system.
Sierra # 18-5239 kit. 1800 663 8396. Call them to check if that is the kit you need.

Sounds like a power supply issue , possibly a high resistance joint common to both the ignition coil and trim motor. When you operate the trim motor it pulls the supply voltage down to the point that the ignition no longer works properly . A volt drop test is probly the best way to investigate this . Also verify that the motor earth is good 😁
