so I am looking at a few doner motors for spare parts. I have the 1988 125 it's the black block. I have a 120 not sure of the year but it looks to have all the same conponutes on it. I also have a 1989 125 I'm looking at but it's the white block(that's the year it's listed as but I thought the white ones are the older years). witch motor would be a better parts doner to mine. both motors are off the boats so can not verify if they run or how well but both of them claim they ran when pulled from the boats.

If the starters still on??? do a compression test.
Jumper cables probably won't supply enough amperage to do a good test, hook to a battery.
On the block under the ignition components is a foundry stamp with the year marked in the center.
The white is 1986 and older. Blac/blue is 97 and up.
The 86 had a different pack and connector hook up. They were plug in and turn the 87 up had the screw down connections.
The ignition from the 87 and up is better, Light blue in old products, Black is the newer ignition.
Look on the block and under the carbs for foundry stamps.

This is a foundry stamp on my replacement power head. Was behind the CD pack. Shows to be a 1988 model.

I thought I read some where maybe on here the 120 are the same external components. So same carb ignition flywheel......but a different boar. Are the lowers identical as well.

125Hp has 3,312 in bore the 120Hp has 3,375 in bore.
Many parts are swappable but such as carbs can be different typs,
Walbro or Tillotson brand with different part numbers.
Gear cases can be different too with different ratio.
If I do not remember wrong the 120Hp only had 2 piece drive shaft but the 125Hp might have both 1 piece and 2 piece drive shaft.
In early 1990es Force went from Prestolite ignition system to Mercury Thunderbolt typ when Mercury started to use more parts from them on the Force engines. Later in 1994 or 95 they changed into Mercury style gear cases too.
