Took the boat out and noticed a burning smell. Opened the hatch and the power steering pump was smoking. Checked it and she was dry. (I can post more on what happened - it was my fault but doesn't matter now).

I know the pump is now toast. Has anyone replaced one of these on their own? I can't find my shop manual so I'm going to order a new one online (anyone ever used emanualonline?)

I also see where the cost of the pump ranges from $70-$700. Gonna have to research that more to see what the heck is going on.

While not necessary easy to find you may find a place that will rebuild your pump. You may find the Volvo Penta OEM very expensive.

I found a place that rebuilds the raw water pumps. And sells the parts to rebuild them. So maybe other places that do PS pumps.

Thought about that but my boat is 3 hours from me. So kind of a pain if I want to try that. I have found some for $100 and they appear to fit. I mean, it's just a power steering pump for a chevy v6. I feel like volvo is asking a lot to just put there name on it.

The Volvo Penta power steering pump has a marine only reservoir.

The difference is the return nipple

Other than that, it's a GM Saginaw power steering pump AKA the "can o ham" pump

Just spend $50 and buy the bare pump from your local FLAPS and swap out the pump from the reservoir, or spend $15 on a rebuild kit.

One item of note: these pumps usually do not come with a pulley. So you will need to reuse old or get a new one. And you will need a PSP pulley remover, installer, like this kit link. That is the kit I have and its worked on my 2005 VP 5.0 GXi-E. Here is a how-to video to use it if not familiar link. Also need to install the pulley to its proper location which is generally front of pulley flush with the shaft. But post all back together need check to see if the belt is running perfectly straight (ie pulley not too far in or out) as if not, belt will wear excessively fast.

Thanks to all, especially for the links. My biggest concern (other than figuring out where/what the is leaking) is getting the pully back in the correct spot. Going to do a bunch of measuring and lots of photos.

usually the return hose is what leaks. unless you see absolutely no oil in the bilge. then its the power steering cooler.

Thanks Scott. Appears the return hose is no longer sold (that I can find). Hoping it's just some sort of normal hose and I can pick something similar up at the local parts store.

Go to NAPA. Get power steering return hose. $2/ft. Or EFI huel hose for $3/ft
