I have an 88 or 89 Force/US Marine 85hp outboard and I am having issues replacing the throttle and shift cables. Can't seem to get them right. Is there a diagram or something that shows the proper hookup etc? I keep thinking I have them wrong.

Make sure the shifter is in Neutral and the gear box is too.
Then install the shift cable.
The throttle cable: Shifter in Neutral.
Towershaft: depending on the connector used? there's 2 available. One has a spring inside the other no.
No spring: hook up everything and as you put the connector over the ball pull the connector(adds tension) then slide it over the ball.
The spring loaded same way but the connector will make it pre loaded.
Look for a video.

Thank you, I think that's a large part of my problem is not realizing what gear the actual outboard is in since I have everything disconnected. I will try to make sure I have it in neutral (prop spins freely) and have the shifter in Neutral as well.....

This is a link to a YouTube video how to connect and adjust the remote control. Paste this in your browser or google it and you should be able to see it. Chrysler Outboard Remote Control cable install and adjustment.
There are some different remote control boxes but they are similar.
Do not know if you have a Chrysler, US Marine, Teleflex or another brand but they are similar.
Thanks, I have a US Marine. I forgot the Chrysler's are very similar, that makes it easier to find info online.
