Broken console to control shift cable

The 1968 Glasspar that I got a few weeks ago without a drive on it was hard to get out of forward and reverse gear the first time I took it out but I little wiggle off the lever near neutral would do the trick. Next time I took it out (last night) was hard to get out of forward and extremely hard to get IN reverse. Like physically didn’t allow me to move lever to reverse. Eventually the cable snapped at the console and I was stuck in drive. Disconnected cable from control and lower cable was easy to move back and forth it’s full throw with engine not running. With engine running, and tied to dock, the lower cable was easy to shift from neutral to forward or reverse. Reverse to neutral was extremely easy, but forward to neutral was extremely hard. Hard to the point it took soo much pressure for me to shift it, I’d miss neutral and hit reverse.
The outdrive is from a 4-cylinder, same year, and engine is a 6-cylinder, which shouldn’t matter as far as I know. When I put the drive on, I had it in forward and had the outdrive lever lined up with bellhousing lever, etc.

Was it just harder to shift out of forward because I was pulled tight tied to docks so it was hard to disengage the gears and easier to get out of reverse because well, its reverse and not nearly under the same amount of pressure as forward on the drive?

I don’t want to replace cable if there’s a potential it’ll break again without fixing the source. I’m hoping just a worn out 57 year old cable.

Thanks

It was working correctly on hose 3 days ago but who knows. haha
Should never operate on a hose, only in the water with a load on the prop.
Operating on land means you need a lower shift cable

I didn't know that, but how else would i check operation of the forward and reverse prior to taking it to the lake?

I can (with engine off) shift it at the bracket easily in both directions. That could still mean I need a lower shift cable?

Just ran it on hose without upper shift cable attached and i can easily shift the drive from lower cable in and out of forward neutral and reverse. What I did notice is that the shift interupt switch is not working ( i manually triggered it in all 3 positions and no change to engine rpm ). So i will swap that out of my "parts boat" And that there I believe is why it was soo hard to get out of forward when in the water.
