Just purchased a 2002 Ventura 221 with a 115hp Mercury 2 stroke. Really excited to get out cleaned and ready to go. I'm sure I'm going to have questions as I get into it, but right now the only thing I can't figure it is the key. The old owner said if you push it in and turn that activated a choke, is that accurate?

Also it has a mercury laser 2 prop (48 16990 A40 20P) that has seen better days. I would like to replace, but don't even know where to begin. Any suggestions?

Boat will be used in lake michigan and smaller lakes with 4-8 people on it.

First…..if the current prop is in bad shape it will be difficult to know if you have the correct prop. You need to try running a wide open throttle and check RPM. There are many websites giving you the range of pitch and blade you’ll need. Do some research.

Im sure someone may have a similar setup as you do on the forum that may chime in.

Prop

Start with Google, contact boat dealer mechanic and go from there

I replaced the stainless steel prop with an aluminum prop of similar pitch, due to damage on the first prop.

The boat is going maybe 30-34 at cruising RPM. Is that normal for these? Seems low to me, but I'm new to the outboard world.

Google tells me it can take a 175 hp max, if that is the case with yours it lits 41 phone so with a 115 your speed sounds reasonable.

I have a 50 on a 115 rated aluminum boat and I can do 31. Macz I'd prob push 60.
