Retaining ring on1975? Johnson

Can anyone tell me which way is up on armature retaining ring (bevel side up or down ) also what is the milled out section for? Thank you in advance.

No info. available OMC stoped making in 1973 i think. Made in Peterborough Canada same basically as 25 hp.

If you are referring to a 20hp, it is basically the same as an 18hp. It was made well into the Late 70s.
