Hooking up trolling motor finally and the breaker i have, couple years old but never used, seems to work in reverse. When in protect mode no power. When I hit the test/trip button the lever pops down to be reset but then I have power?

Normally pushing down a C B causes it to stay down and supply power to the motor.
Are you testing it with the battery connected ? Or doing it with no battery connected ? It should stay down either way.

Your positive wire from the battery should go to the stud on breaker marked BAT. Your positive wire from the motor goes to the stud marked AUX. Your negative cable should go right from motor to battery, not through the breaker.
Curious, what voltage is your trolling motor?

OK working now but I don't have speed one. Low batteries? They are a couple years old and never had them on a charger.

Your breaker is wired backwards. The line (power source) should connect to the terminal marked "line." The load (trolling motor) goes to the terminal marked "load." Swap the wires.
