Hi, I am having the same trouble with the same engine, a Johnson cd-12 5.5 hp. It ran last week, but, only on one cylinder. I pulled the fw and the coils were cracked and disintegrating. I replaced the coils, but I was not sure which was the ground so I tried it both ways. No luck. Today I changed the condensers, and gapped the points. Still no luck. Is there something in the throttle which shorts the ignition when the throttle is turned to stop? Could there be something else which is shorting the system? Odd that it ran last week on one cylinder and gets no spark after a coil change.
Thanks, Leslie

There is nothing that grounds the Ignition as the Throttle is turn to stop. It is simply the Retarded Spark that Kills the Motor.
Go over your work again. Is there a chance you have shorted the Points to Ground?

The points tested ok when I checked them with an ohm meter.

Nothing in the handle with wires.------You are sure you have wires from coil going to the correct set of points?------Did you remove the magplate to properly install plug wires into the coils.-----There are many videos on how to maintain this elegantly simple magneto on U-tube.

front coil goes to the top plug...why don't you replace your plug wires with 7mm solid strand metallic wire . you may have good continuity from boots to grd but old wires frayed/bent can still allow HV to jump to a closer point than plugs .

don't be afraid of pulling the mag plate to secure everything with a touch of di-electric grease around the 7mm wire and in the rubber protector facing the coil.

You have done all the rest may as well do the plug wires for years of trouble free operation. I am surprised you could snip the wire .25 inch at the coil and reinsert it seeing it is generally clamped solidly under the mag plate

i, I eased the clamps on the plug wites and was able to push/pull the wire out far enough to a. Clip off about 1/4” and b. Screw the clil on. However in desperation, I will pullthe mag plate and use new wires to try to get this thing going.
Thanks
