I split by hand for years as well but my back is not up to the task anymore so I bit the bullet and got a splitter. I get all my wood for free so it makes sence for me to continue on. I do some tree work myself and have friends in the bizz that even drop it off at my house. All I have to do buck split and fill the wood shed.

My propane logs use a thermocouple for the gas. The only thing that AC is used for is the circulating fan.
These newer ones must be made less reliable if they require power (plug in or battery) just to make fire.

My cabin Propane wall heater has a pilot and a thermostat for temperature control. NO fan. Simple pilot burner with a press to electronic striker. No electric at all. No chimney required.
Catalytic blue flame. The alarms have never sounded and tests O K for years.

Most only use power for a fan, but many of today's fancy units have electronic control boxes where fan, thermostat, burner controls for remote controls and other bells and whistles are incorporated. I am doing it for the fan, unit gets way to hot without fan to move air around.
