Picked up a 1990 Force 50HP yesterday.

Went and pulled a 1990 Force Outboard 50 model 507X90D, from a 1990 Bayliner boat yesterday for a pretty decent price. Got the steering, throttle, all cables, plus the electrical all the way to the battery with the deal. It hasn't run for three years. But was running when the guy we got it from purchased the project.

Checked compression and spark before we started. Both cylinders just over 140lbs compression and sparking on both plug wires.

We plan on putting it on the fishing boat we are building from the hupp up.

Ordered carb gaskets and a new needle. I'm sure the bowl is varnished and want it fresh/clean before we try to fire it up. Will install a telltale while I'm at it.

A new impeller is also on the way as well as new spark plugs. The old plugs look new and we can keep them in the boat box when we finally launch, as spares on the lake for 'just in case'. We will hopefully have it ready to launch in November.

When the parts arrive will be getting started to ensure the engine and drive are sound. Hopefully things will go smoothly.

Can't think of anything I'm missing on getting it ready for install in a few weeks. Fingers crossed...

Don't they all say that? Sounds like you got the basics covered (comp-spark-carb-impeller). Wouldn't hurt to take the carb off and clean it real good, check the float level, etc, since it's been setting up for a few years. Good luck.

The boat we took it off of hadn't been licensed in 15 years. The guy bought it as a project, and didnt have the skills to execute it. My friend went through the floor trying to get up front to the battery.

My guess the person he got it from tinkered with the motor long enough to make it run so he could sell it. IMO, Without redoing everything from the hull up, the boat was worthless, except for the engine.

We plan to put a lot of hours on the motor fishing, so gonna make sure all is well while it's on the stand before trying to mount it.

You are right, especially if it was an old fiberglass boat. At least you won't have a worthless hull to get rid of. Not sure what the completion rate is for project boats, but from what I have heard it is not very high. They start out with great intentions, but soon realize it was a lot more than they bargained for. A free boat can end up being a very expensive boat.

Metalchewy: you bought a good motor, they will last a long time, just use a good oil and keep up the maintenance.
That motor needs a special set of muffs for running off the hose.
That motor can run on 1 cyl. and run fairly good.
No muffs? run it in a DEEEEP bucket, at least 4-6 inches over the cavitation plate.
The pump isn't self priming and needs to be under water to pickup.

I saw those muffs in another thread the other day when I signed up for the forum and was reading through a lot of the threads. Wasn't sure where to get them. Searches didn't seem to find them.

I was referring to the boat he took the motor off of......a project the previous owner never finished. I see that he has an aluminum boat he will be restoring to put the Force on. He won't have to worry about endless hours of grinding rotten wood, old fiberglass, etc. Should be a lot easier to fix it up the way he wants it. Didn't mean to rain on anybody's parade......

I think the dumps around here will take a hull, not sure how much that would cost.......then there is the old trailer you would have to deal with, too, if it had one.

It had a decent trailer. But have no use for it. The trailer we got with the boat needs alittle TLC and paimt work but has a permanent license tag on it. When we title/license the boat, will transfer that to a new title.

Back before I started working on anything(cars, boats etc.) I had a 15ft. trihull with a late 70's 85hp Mercury. I decided to go up to a bigger boat. Bought a 31ft.cabin cruiser. The 85Mercury ran good and then started to get hard to start.
Sold it to a guy who insisted to start it. I turned the key and it fired. The guy really got it REALLLLY cheap. I made sure the bill of sale said AS IS!!!
Turns out the middle cylinder had blown and had low comp.
He let it set for 3 years and in the mean time I started working on boats. Went to work at a local repair shop and the boat was setting there waiting for the motor to be rebuilt. Make double sure of anything you buy and the words AS IS is very important.
BUYER BEWARE!!!!
