so I winterized a friend's 2012 (again) last year in December after she kept saying that she was going to get it done...
anyway, it was near freezing at the time, and I apparently left the plugs out and hoses off. this spring, I couldn't remember if I had replaced that stuff or not. short version, the boat was started and run for maybe a minute or 2 (not my fault, she didn't wait for me!). when I checked it out I could hear a faint squeal and there was no water coming out of the hoses. the plumbing on this thing is a mystery to me and i can't trace the hoses back. so what needs to be fixed now? I don't have a sn for it

raw water impeller is toast. check the rubber exhaust couplings for burning.

is that all? the rubber didn't feel crunchy last time out. are there exhaust shutters? I'm secretly hoping that she ruins this engine so that I get a nice new upgraded hull (21' chappy, way nicer than mine) for free that I can throw a carb V8 into...

no exhaust shutters.

if the motor was only run for a minute or two, then the raw water impeller and maybe the rubber exhaust couplers.

if it was run for about 5 minutes or longer, circulating pump, heads, etc.

no, definitely not long enough to get up to temp. we'll start with the impeller and go from there. I'll have her grab a manual as well if I'm going to be servicing the damn thing. thanks!

I have mixed feelings about the GXI. Neighbor just spent $1500 on new ECM with EFI Bob because the thing just quit

Could convert back to a 4bbl carb! Not cheap unless you buy used stuff. Edelbrock 1409 new is like $620, a Holley 4160 new like what OMC & Volvo used is about $900 now, plus a 4bbl intake ($300). Also would need a low pressure fuel pump.

I assume RWC. While I would change the raw water impeller I think you will find it undamaged. There was probably enough water hanging around in the raw water pump to lubricate it for a minute or two.

Last year I connected up the muffs to my outdrive and started the engine forgetting to actually turn the water on to the muffs. Impeller still looked new.

Of the 4 GXi Volvo Pentas I have worked on, I don’t think any of the impellers ever made it to the recommended change time. The Monterey had a closed cooling system so that added picking rubber bits out of the heat exchanger when doing an impeller change. The last one I did on a Cobalt had less than 100 hours/2 years on it but was missing one complete fin.

I have yet to be called out for an overheat between servicings. Volvo impellers are easy to check so I generally do so during oil change while waiting for the oil to drain. These boats get beached a lot and the lower units used as anchors so it is hard telling what kind of trash gets sucked through the system. All lower unit mounted impellers seem to make it to their recommended change date/time. Base plates and housings will be severely grooved but the impeller itself will be intact unless it was run dry.

I don’t like the exposed cam pulleys on Yamaha because we had one take a hit to the cowl that stopped one and destroyed the powerhead. Even so, I do favor Yamaha over all the others I have worked.

I should say that I am not a “marine technician”. Just a guy doing basic servicing for a rental type fleet.
