Is this engine oil good?

I came across what I consider a great substitute engine oil that seems to meet all the Mercruiser requirements and is reasonably priced at $36.94 for a 5 quart jug. That is enough to do a 4.3 ltr. engine including filter. I's called Triax Marine Ultra, is fully synthetic and I saw it on Amazon. It even includes shipping. What do you think?

Look at the back of the bottle and read the API certification label. Think it should be SJ

Quicksilver so conveniently does not disclose any certification data on their oils other than FC-W. Quicksilver is at best a blend. I believe Mercury specifies a fully synthetic oil. The rating on Triax is NMMA, FC-W, API SM, JASO MA. I think that's better than OEM but I don't know what all of that means

No one can really say. If you run it do a Blackstone oil analysis and then you’ll know. I’ve had good results with both the conventional Merc 25/40 & syn blend 25/50. I do an oil analysis at the end of each season.

Triax might be ok oil. The thing is, they mislead with certifications. Their oil is not NMMA certified, that is easy to look up.

The way I look at it, this this oil is most likely as good as any in that category, if not better. If you can't trust the label, well then I'll give up or go crazy. I figured I am not gonna worry about. And the price is good too.

But the label says it is. Do you really think they risk being sued?
Deceptive marketing…

They list three specifications, but find it interesting they don’t claim to be “certified” to any of the standards nor do they claim to “meet” any of the specifications.

Anything sold only on Amazon that’s engine related is immediately suspect to me. So they put the specs but don’t say they meet or exceed them unless that’s on their website. There are a number of alternatives you can find the Merc/Quicksilver oil anywhere really, or you can use a 20/50 from the auto parts store which will not break down viscosity in marine use….

Digging into their website, their API SN certification number is posted.

The reference to NMMA FC-W is different......

From the data sheet for marine oils.....

SPECIFICATIONS
API SN, SL
NMMA FC-W

In small text below........

Is the gamble of damaging your boat engine worth saving 10/20 bucks ? Never understood trying to save a few bucks, gambling on a 5K or more boat engine !
