DeWalt corded drill DW106 Type-2 keyless chuck, bits slipping out?

DeWalt DW106 Type-2​

The DeWalt DW106 is a 3/8" variable speed reversing (VSR) drill with a keyless chuck.
Some bits slipping out, what's the fix? Thx guys

Crank it reeeeaaallll tight? Usually that only happens once, then when I rechuck the bit it stays. I think sometimes the hex bits don't tighten down on the flats, so they slip and come loose. I can't explain why the smooth shank bits do it too.

The drill is worth about $25 to 30
New chuck will fix the issue but it's about $25

Have two…absolute junk chucks
Looked into a decent Jacobs chuck but never followed up.

Much easier to just grab the Milwaukee hole shooter out of the drawer if I need something capable.

I had to change out a keyless chuck on a brand new Dewalt for that reason several years ago. It simply would not hold a bit. Tightened it as tight as I could. Bit would feel tight but come loose almost instantly when in use. Dewalt sent me a replacement chuck for free. I opted for a keyed chuck. It is the only keyless I ever owned that did that.

I don’t know the model but it is a Dewalt 3/8” corded drill. I bought it in 2014 or 2015.

You could try blasting it out with aerosol degreaser and compressed air . I used a ¼" round saw file in the chuck to make sure there were no hight spots in a Bosch drill chuck .
Annoying as it usually results in gouges in the drill shank ....and then they dont fit back in the box .......and look bad

I know what you mean. I grab mine anytime I have serious drilling to do and I have a place to plug it in.

You can get a good, medium duty Jacob’s for $50.

Cost less than a new drill after I throw the drill out of frustration…lol

Yeah maybe in the states but by the time I convert to NZ$ that is $95 , plus ,$50 to $75 for freight ( freight x US is probly the most expensive there is ....Italy is hight too )and Im over $150, and bought locally ......there is precious little if any to be saved .
The keyless chuck on my 18v Makita is still good after 20 odd years , press chuck needs all three holes tightened and I dont use the ( 240vac) Bosch any more coz I sick of wreaking good drill bits in it .

Steel , but I think that particular keyless chuck is needing a hoozle up, it should be ok as its all steel but I think its time to take it apart for a clean and debur, shame coz otherwise its a good drill .

When I retired we had a ton of broken dewalt tools. A shelf about 30 feet long 24 inches deep full. Everything from drills, sawzalls, grinders, various sanders, impacts etc. all cordless stuff. Crew of 15 tradesman, switched via attrition to Makita and Dewalt. If I was still there I could have sent you a chuck. We kept them to show they were broke in case the business manager showed up with invoices asking questions. Never got around to tossing them.

If that works you found the problem… a good quality chuck is harder than a file.

Since you’re down under, look into Accuratecut chucks. Good quality, made in Tiawan
