have a 1985 Johnson 140 looper with a bad fuel pump side on the VRO. Want to go back to premixing fuel. What about using an automotive electronic type fuel pump and mounting it under the cowling? Is there a 12v. switched source on the motor? Besides plugging the pulse fitting what else would need to be considered? Have read manny of the notes in here about dissabling VRO but have never seen any comments about going electric/ What do you all think?

Bad idea... Save yourself lots of grief. If you want to premix, have your local JohnnyRude dealer order you a "premix conversion" kit p/n 438402, about $150. It's an "exact replacement" for the VRO (minus the oil pump side).

Too many safety/wiring considerations to bother dealing with an electric fuel pump.

-John

Re: Johnson VRO Conversion

thanks for the advice and suggestions on the VRO conversion. purchased a #438559 pump from local dealer who says it will work since I'm going back to premix. will need to fabricate a bracket but overall, I think the conversion should be fairly straight forward. the electric pump sounded like a good idea at the time, but all and all, this should be the safest and cheapist solution.

Good choice going to the right pump. I just disconnected my vro so I have one piece of advice, make sure you disconnect the wiring harness to the vacuum valve. If you don't it will give you an out of oil alarm. Trace the wiring from the vro pump to the valve. You will find a harness with three wires about halfway in between. Simply unplug it. This will insure your overheat alarm is still intact, if it is installed on your motor, but your vro alarms are no longer working.
