I was reading a message posted by Rick C where he said he had this manual. This is a 1960 5.5 hp. Johnson Seahorse. I have it running but there is no water coming out of the exhaust port but lots of bubbles and turbulance around the prop when it is running but in neutral. Is this OK ?

Hi jinx
No, it's not ok. It sounds to me like you need to service your water pump. There are many good after market manuals available. Most public libraries will have a copy. Of course an oem manual is best, but don't let not having one stop you from doing your service and repairs. good luck.

For original type manuals try www.kencook.com
also watch ebay.
I have a generic manual from Seloc that covers 57-70 E/J 1.5-40hp.I got it on ebay.
While I havent had to make a repair from it.
What I have read seems ok.And it warns you stuff to watch out for.

Thanks for the reply guys. I was afraid water needed to be coming out of the exhaust port. I know nothing about the water pump or even where it is on this motor. I will keep trying to find a manual, last resort I will pay the 40 bucks Cook wants for one.

Re: Need Johnson Model CD-17 service manual

Jinx--About 6 months ago I was in the same situation you're in; I had just gotten a '56 Johnson 7.5 off ebay to restore, and I knew little to nothing about the motor. Although I had done some minor outboard repairs in the past, I had the original service manual to guide me, and things went ok. But the '55-'65 generation of motors has its own set of issues. I first got a Clymer manual, much like the Seloc, and it gave me a pretty good guide to things like the water pump. I also got a manual from Ken Cook which is probably good for mechanics because of its extreme detail, but seems to require either shop or class familiarization with outboards in order to sort everything out.
I believe your water pump situation is similar to the '56 model in that the pump impeller is located inside the lower unit where the exhaust housing is connected above the cavitation plate. You will see four screws holding the assembly together. If the '60 5.5 is like the '56, then the power head will have to be removed in order to release the shift rod so that the lower unit can drop down to change the impeller. This is where a manual is a must, and I found the Clymer generic Johnson-Evinrude manual for that period to be more helpful than the Johnson Service Manual I got from Ken Cook for that operation. I also got help from the people on this board to get the powerhead removed. Larger models from that era, and later models, have a plate in the exhaust housing on the starboard side halfway down which allows access to the shift rod connector whereby you can disconnect the rod without removing the power head. In either event, you need the manual. You might try Amazon, or the links here on iboats. Many people who post here are very experienced, and it is best to check here under a thread of your current project as you begin it because answers come back fast and precise.

Re: Need Johnson Model CD-17 service manual

Thanks so much for your reply 7.5Runner. I took your advise and searched for the generic manual and found the Clymer '56 -'72 shop manual at the bottom of this page @ iboats. It is $34-- including shipping. Thats not bad though I have seen the actual CD-17 manual for sale on ebay quite a while back and could kick myself for not purchasing then. This power head removal sounds a little advanced and I want to make sure I have all parts including gaskets and impellar before I get into this. I will post back once I get manual. Thanks again. Jinx
