Re: Need Johnson Model CD-17 service manual
Jinx--About 6 months ago I was in the same situation you're in; I had just gotten a '56 Johnson 7.5 off ebay to restore, and I knew little to nothing about the motor. Although I had done some minor outboard repairs in the past, I had the original service manual to guide me, and things went ok. But the '55-'65 generation of motors has its own set of issues. I first got a Clymer manual, much like the Seloc, and it gave me a pretty good guide to things like the water pump. I also got a manual from Ken Cook which is probably good for mechanics because of its extreme detail, but seems to require either shop or class familiarization with outboards in order to sort everything out. <br /> I believe your water pump situation is similar to the '56 model in that the pump impeller is located inside the lower unit where the exhaust housing is connected above the cavitation plate. You will see four screws holding the assembly together. If the '60 5.5 is like the '56, then the power head will have to be removed in order to release the shift rod so that the lower unit can drop down to change the impeller. This is where a manual is a must, and I found the Clymer generic Johnson-Evinrude manual for that period to be more helpful than the Johnson Service Manual I got from Ken Cook for that operation. I also got help from the people on this board to get the powerhead removed. Larger models from that era, and later models, have a plate in the exhaust housing on the starboard side halfway down which allows access to the shift rod connector whereby you can disconnect the rod without removing the power head. In either event, you need the manual. You might try Amazon, or the links here on iboats. Many people who post here are very experienced, and it is best to check here under a thread of your current project as you begin it because answers come back fast and precise.
