Hi. I own an 86 Johnson 6hp which has recently developed a problem with the fuel system. I was hoping someone might help.

The engine does not appear to be able to pull fuel from the tank. It runs after being pumped, (and if I keep pumping, the engine keeps running) but soon consumes all the fuel and sputters out.

The weird thing is that when the fuel line is attached to the motor, and I pump the bulb, fuel sprays out from the connection between the motor and the line (obviously, some is getting through). When I pump the bulb, and it is not connected, it behaves normally.

I'm guessing that the fuel system inside the motor
might be clogged, b/c the hose end is such a simple mechanism and looks OK.

How would I go about diagnosing and reparing such a problem?

Thanks.

Dan
