6hp Johnson - Fuel Intake Problems

Hi. I own an 86 Johnson 6hp which has recently developed a problem with the fuel system. I was hoping someone might help.

The engine does not appear to be able to pull fuel from the tank. It runs after being pumped, (and if I keep pumping, the engine keeps running) but soon consumes all the fuel and sputters out.

The weird thing is that when the fuel line is attached to the motor, and I pump the bulb, fuel sprays out from the connection between the motor and the line (obviously, some is getting through). When I pump the bulb, and it is not connected, it behaves normally.

I'm guessing that the fuel system inside the motor
might be clogged, b/c the hose end is such a simple mechanism and looks OK.

How would I go about diagnosing and reparing such a problem?

Thanks.

Dan

If fuel is coming out, then when you stop pumping air is surely being sucked into the line. Air in the gas will stall the engine. Those end connections don't last forever. You probably just need a new one.

Do you think its the connection on the fuel line, or the one on the motor?

Thanks.

Dan

It's almost always the one on the line. There's a little o-ring that the ball presses against, and it gets cracked and torn. You can replace it by using a hook made from some stiff wire and a matchstick to push the ball down. You hook the o-ring and pull it out.
However, it's easier if you just buy a new connector, and a whole new line and bulb are pretty cheap.
