Never had a kicker, but a must in that I will be going on bigger water with kids. Need direction on how to mount.

Have a 40hp Mercury on the above boat. As the boat is a somewhat narrow width at the transom, concerned about how to mount. Ideal would like to get a 9.9hp 4 stroke and mount on the transom, but afraid it will interfere with the 40 and vice versa when turning. And how to keep the motor not in the water 'locked straight'.

Appears the kicker needs 12" clearance to make a full stop turn on each side. Looks like I have about half that, limiting turning radius (and that of the 40 to an extent). Big problem?

Local dealer says to mount on spring mount on outside of transom. Would like to avoid the expense ($500 installed) and loss of tiller length on the kicker. Might even need an electric steer which I do not want: Idea is to have a pure second power source independent of the other and the boats electical system (not to mention the $350 extra hit).

Worst case I would consider a 6hp or 8hp 4 stroke. Want to use it on my 14' row and a 16' boat I use often at a friends campground.

If the spring mount is the way to go, would appreciate any input on avoiding electric steer, good/bad mount models and an on-line purchase source.

Thanks in advance for your kind consideration!
