Never had a kicker, but a must in that I will be going on bigger water with kids. Need direction on how to mount.

Have a 40hp Mercury on the above boat. As the boat is a somewhat narrow width at the transom, concerned about how to mount. Ideal would like to get a 9.9hp 4 stroke and mount on the transom, but afraid it will interfere with the 40 and vice versa when turning. And how to keep the motor not in the water 'locked straight'.

Appears the kicker needs 12" clearance to make a full stop turn on each side. Looks like I have about half that, limiting turning radius (and that of the 40 to an extent). Big problem?

Local dealer says to mount on spring mount on outside of transom. Would like to avoid the expense ($500 installed) and loss of tiller length on the kicker. Might even need an electric steer which I do not want: Idea is to have a pure second power source independent of the other and the boats electical system (not to mention the $350 extra hit).

Worst case I would consider a 6hp or 8hp 4 stroke. Want to use it on my 14' row and a 16' boat I use often at a friends campground.

If the spring mount is the way to go, would appreciate any input on avoiding electric steer, good/bad mount models and an on-line purchase source.

Thanks in advance for your kind consideration!

Just a couple of commments. I'm not familiar with your particular boat and maybe someone with more direct experience will post. But I've done kickers, so here goes.

RE: the price of a kicker bracket installed. Really, this is a pretty straight forward DIY. The holes you need to drill are above waterline so installation is just a matter of drilling them in the right place, bolting and sealing with silicone or marine sealant. The cost is going to be more like $100 for parts and about an hour project.

RE: steering a kicker on a bracket: I've used extension handles which work fine. I've also used EZ Steer coupling with main motor. This has been with remote steering and works perfectly. The company has an excellent web site and super customer service, so give them a call to see if it would work with your tiller main engine.

Good luck with your project.

I also have a 2002 17 foot Lund. With my 8 HP kicker I use the EZ steer coupling (mine is similar) as mentioned above and this works well.

Would you recommend a long shaft or short?

here is where the fun comes in. You can use a short shaft motor on the ProV ,I'm assuming the 14' and 16' rows are short shaft, If you use an external mount on your ProV. You will need to use a longshaft if you want to mount it to your transom next to your 40hp, I use a short shaft on mine but you CANNOT backup with it and it will ventilate over 1/2 throttle. My Lund Pike has a 72" beam and I used a 6hp evinrude along side my 55hp johnson (which was centered) on the back and there was just enough room for them both. I'm pretty sure your ProV is wider than my Old Pike.
