1) Excessive play in throttle cable, Is ths fixable?
Accellerate to any given RPM and need to back
the throttle off almost an inch of travel before
any effect. Then need to throttle up almost an
inch before the RPM's pick up. This is from the
remote control throttle, not at the engine. Ive
had the remote apart, but nothing obvious on how
to remove this play. The remote is Single lever
with external key switch and no push buttons.

2) Hard time getting into reverse. Electric shift.
Will only pop into reverse at very low RPM's or
if I start it in gear in reverse. Proper type C
lubricant is installed. Neutral is fine as is
forward.

3) Electric Tilt... This is an electric tilt from a
1972 125. It will not stay tilted up. I have
tried to remove the bypass valve screw after
removing the snap ring, but stopped when I could
not find what was preventing if from pulling out.
Any suggestions? and am I on the right track as
far as what is allowing the engine to tilt back
down? (This is only a Tilt, not trim. It is
supposed to support the motor in the up position
the tilt cylinder replaces one of the tilt
assist pistons and the pump is on the outside
of the transom bracket, also has a seperate mini
cylinder for operating the reverse lock)

Thanks in advance,
Mike

check the throttle , by manualy moving it on the motor itself,to see if the rpm's changed..,sounds like alot of play in the cable or at one end or the other of connection,, the movement should be touchy,as far as throttling up or down,if you can visually see if the throttle is moving at the linkage connection, then check for any slop in the movment,,it is difficult to answer this question, without being able to look at the cable & linkage connections.

Re: 3 Questions on 1970 85hp Johnson

Thanks for the response.

It doesn't seem to be play in the cable as much
as play in the throttle lever to cable linkage.

Regarding shifting, when I say low RPM I mean almost
stalled. ie, it will not shift into reverse at
800rpm (and I can hear gear scraping) but at
600rpm it might. My guess is something along the
weak solinoid, or oil pump. Anyway I'll probably
wait until fall when I pull the boat out and
to try and track this one down.

Thanks again,
Mike
