I have Been trying to start my engine, the last time out it spluttered a bit so I came back. It has been out of the water since (about 3 weeks ago) this weekend I finally got around to flushing. I tried to start but there is no spark. also i have found one of the bolts that secure the bottom part of the leg on is missing and there is an unused fuel mixture comming out of the hole where the bolt shoud be and also out of the center of the prop, is this normall? And where has my spark gone? Sorry to go on but, I am new to outboard motors but can find my way around a diesel ok. The engine is a 35hp evinrude dont know the year as the serial plate seems to be missing and I can only find part numbers.

Re: Been trying to start engine

Hi ya' Will...sorry ta' hear about the current malady. Look for a large core plug on the engine block. The engine model number should be there. The year would help to determine the type ignition, standard with points or CD with power pack. Maybe you can tell from looking.

JB posted a real good FAQ on engines not starting. Look on the main menu for FAQ. Give this a shot.

Your engine is probably a two cylinder. Losing all spark commonly means something common to both cylinders. Either the power pack if equipped or the power coil. This is where the year would be nice to have.

As far as the fuel coming from the lower unit, when the fuel dosen't burn, it goes out the exhaust. That's where it's coming from. When the engine finally does start, that problem should disappear.

Keep us posted....thanks.

Re: Been trying to start engine

Hi there Jim, Thanks for the advice I have been out to look this morning. What does CD mean? As I think my engine may use this type of ignition system. I could not find the big core plug you talked about but have found a black box on the side of the engine with printed numbers and letters on it (CD2 5?1926 0A 12 N) the second number looks like either 6,5 or 8. The HT leads come out of two similar but smaller boxes on the opposite side of the engine (cant see any numbers on these). I have found a number on the engine case under the choke mechanism (322124 D/E #2) does this mean any thing to you. There is another number on the block just below where the lower HT box thing is bolted on (24319D2). 323254, 323253, 322884 D-1 & 319709-1 I have found around the transom clamp where I was also advised to look.

I’m sure if I can get the year so I can then get a manual will help me but am very confused with all the numbers on the engine which I am sure are part numbers.

PS. The engine is an electric start.

Make sure to check out the kill switch, too...

If it's a CD-2, it's probably in the area of an 80's model. The plug looks like a freeze plug about the size of a quarter. Might have been painted over.

The fuel leak you describe is probably the unburnt fuel from trying to start the engine with no spark. Fix your spark and the "leak" will probably disappear. Buy an inexpensive spark tester at an auto parts store and find out if its the ignition or the spark plug, and whether or not its 1 cylinder or all cylinders.

Thanks for that guys, I shall look again. I think i need to make identifying the engine year a priority then can get a manual as none of the bits look familliar to me apart from cyliders and plugs the obvious. Thanks again this site is the BIZ

CD means Compact Disk, or in the boating forums, Capacitor Discharge :D

Re: Been trying to start engine

I have been out to look again and all I can find are part numbers, I have even had my wife and nipper looking to make sure I'm not missing it.

Is it possible to tell the year by matching the part numbers with a list? and is there such a list?. I have got some numbers from the engine as follows. Cylider Head 324320-2, Cylider Case? (next bit along) 32419-D2, Right side crank case? 325744-2, Left side Crank Case? 324326.

I dont think there is a kill switch, just an ignition key and on the control box there is a flat knob which turns both ways (dont know what is is for (realy need a book)).

Re: Been trying to start engine

'kay Will, lets see what we can figure out. A coupla questions.

1. How many cylinders?

2. How many carburetors?

3. How many wires coming out from under the flywheel and what colors are they?

4.Is it a manual shift, electric shift or do you know?

We may not be able to figure out the year from this but maybe we can get it running.

c/6
Hooty

Hooty...way to go! That's how you help someone that is not as familar as you, and most of the others are on this site. I am of no help to willow, however, I would like to give credit where credit is due. Especially since you hold the Cuervo!
Butch

Re: Been trying to start engine

Hello Hooty, Thanks for the reply as you can see I am struggling a bit & any help is much Appreciated.

1. 2 cyliders

2. 1 carburetor

3. there are 2 sets of wires going under the fly wheel, first set have 1 Yellow with a blue stripe and 2 plain Yellow wires. The second set has 1 Brown with a Yellow stripe, 1 Black & 1 White wires. 6 wires in total.

4. I think it must be manual shift as it looks quite basic. Would electric be obvious to look at?

Re: Been trying to start engine

willow, heres an easy way to tell if its electric or manual shift, as i have one of eazch right now...
if its electric, there will be 2 wires coming up from the lower unit, factory colors wer blue and green..
if its a manual shift, on the same side of the motor as the throttle cabble connections, there will be a connection for another cable, the shift cable, and the shift lever, to thr front is forward and the rear is reverse, obviously

they stopped making the elctric shifs in 1972

and to all you old guuruus, yes i know there were hydro and elctric shifts, i was just trying to be simple :)

Re: Been trying to start engine

With the engine cowling off, on the starboard side of the engine, there should be a round, red cable connector or plug where two cables join. Unplug this connection and, using a jumper wire, jump the starter solenoid so that the starter spins and tries to start the engine. To do this, jump from the large cable that comes from the battery and connects to the large post on the starter solenoid to the small post on the solenoid. If it has two small post, jump to the one that does not have a black wire connected to it. This will spin the engine. Now, with the engine spinning, short the sparkplug wires and see if you have spark. If you do, the "no spark" situation is being caused by either a defective ignition switch or a shorted wire in the cable from the engine to the remote. If you still don't have a spark, get back to us on this thread and lettus know.

c/6
Hooty

Re: Been trying to start engine

I have been out to look today and try what you said but i am confused as to which wire to disconnect. I have found how to spin the engine though by jumping it the way you explained still with no spark though. Do you mean if I am standing at the back of the boat the wire to disconnect would be on the starboard side, the opposite side to the solenoid?

sorry long time to reply but we have had bad storm all weekend and only this afternoon was able to get outside to look.
