Hi there mgosey.

On your engine you must remove the powerhead (engine) before you can disconnect the shift linkage, as it is directly beneath the power head. Carefully note the position of the lower crankcase seal components on the driveshaft after you remove it.
I strongly recommend you get a repair manual before tackling this job. They are worth their weight in gold. You can get one from this site, your local library, or get a reprint of the original factory repair manual from one of the following places:
TheOutboardWizard
Mastertech
Marine Engine
Ken Cook
You can get the parts to do this from Iboats or NAPA autoparts (if you're in the 'States). Here are the partnumbers:
Water pump repair kit 18-3202 (includes new wear plate and impeller)
5.5hp base gasket 18-2901
Also, you can get the equivelant OEM parts from your local Johnny/Rude dealer. If he's unresponsive try Mastertech.
Good luck!

Dealing with stuck and broken fasteners is part of working on an outboard. Heat from a propane torch, impact screwdrivers, penetrating oil, and above all - patience - is the way to get them out. If you have acess to a welder, you can weld a new nut to the top of the broken stud. The heat from the welding will surely break the fastener loose.
If not, and the fastener is broken off flush with the surface, drill out precisely the centre of the screw. Then work your way up in drill sizes until all that's left in the screwhole is the thread. If you're lucky and accurate, the old thread will come out like a spring. If that doesn't work, obtain and install a helicoil.
Good luck!
