Re: need some help please with oiler

I think he said he's getting a steady tone alarm and he doesn't think it is an overheat because he just installed a new thermostat.Of course that's just my interpretation and may be wrong. If right it sounds as if it may be the fuel restriction alarm.
Edit: But then I don't belive a 1989 model has the fuel restriction alarm.

jobo17,Is the alarm beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep or beep beep beep.

OK,If the beeps are every 20 seconds it's a low oil alarm from the oil tank.If the beeps are rapid(one after the other quickly) it is the no oil alarm from the vro pump.Tell us which one it is.

Meanwhile, check oil level in oil reservoir.,Make sure it is 1/2 full or more.

Re: need some help please with oiler

Sounds like the no oil alarm then.Do this .Mix 50:1 fuel and TCW3 oil in your fuel tank.Next disconnect the oil line inlet to the vro pump. It's a little hard to get to under the lower carb but you can do it.Then pump the primer ball on the OIL tank until clear air free oil is coming out and then reconnect.Run the engine with the premix fuel and the vro connected and see if the alarm will clear itself after a few on and off starts.Run the premix fuel until you can visually verify usage from the vro oil tank and no more alarms.Post back with your results.

Also check the pickup tube strainer in the vro tank and make sure it is clear of debris and there is NO water in oil tank.

Re: need some help please with oiler

ok i went to the boat store and ask the guy how much tcw3 to make and he told me not to mix myself because he didn't know how much because it has a self oiler.i took apart the fuel pump and it was good nothing wrong in their.started the motor again and the same thing beeps every 3 sec.took off the spark plugs and they were black is that to much oil or gas the oil line was good the water pump is pumping out a good strem cold water not not i just put new spark plugs in with wires and the boat went out three time the 4th time ran like crap then these problems.the frist few time i took it out couldn't run full power it would bog down and wouldn't go faster.so what next? o by the way thanks for your help.

Re: need some help please with oiler

Jobo,
OB is very correct in his advice if you have an oiler problem. The VRO oiler is supposed to mix with the gas at about 100:1 (50:1 to 150:1 depending on engine requirements). You can safely mix 50:1 AND use the oiler. The idea is that after you purge the air from the oiler system by pumping the oiler primer bulb, you can run the motor, knowing it is getting an oil/gas mix (because you mixed the oil with the gas, about 1 liter of oil to 24 liters of gas) AND if your oiler is working, you will note after a tankful that you've used some of the oil in your oil tank.

The once every 20 sec beep is supposed to warn of low oil. Sometimes the pickup unit and the disc/contacts are out of position or get dirty. You can clean them by removing them and soaking in some solvent. The floats are supposed to raise the disc clear of the contacts, if it doesn't, replace the pick up unit.

As to the bogging down, is it possible that your fuel system is having trouble from the alchohol in the fuel, or you have a cracked or leaking fuel line between your tank and the motor. At some point on some models Johnson put plastic float bowls on the carbs and these warp from the alchohol in the fuels. It is worth a look.

Good luck.

Re: need some help please with oiler

The spark plugs darken pretty quickly, and may even appear to have a wet coating of oil on them. This could mean too much gas (excessive idle mixture with oil mixed into it) or possibly bad timing or weak spark. A good set up would be indicated by spark plugs with dark stains around the outer part of the threads and dry tan or light brown deposits on the insulator for the electrode. Plugs can sometimes look black and still function fine, even an overly rich engine can make a lot of power. Maybe not peak power, but good power.

Hope this helps.

Re: need some help please with oiler

Jobo,
I don't ever remember being able to flood the engine out on oil with the primer bulb for the oil system, but maybe I never tried... I do remember that the primer bulb gets very firm once everything is reconnected. The manual says that priming the VRO system is unnecessary prior to starting the engine, and loads the carburetors with an excessively rich mixture.

Follow OB's directions exactly, and see how it is working. It wouldn't have anything to do with the fuel pump, because the VRO system pumps directly to each carburator.
