I bought the boat last year and it came with a 1989 25hp Mercury. I bought it last year and took it out about 5 times. The first few time it ran perfect, but the last time I took it out is started to give me problems. After launching it I couldn’t get it to start. I changed the plugs and made sure the gas connections were properly connected. After a few minutes of messing about with it, it finally started up. I noticed also that the throttle adjustment at the motor had vibrated which changed the setting, so I thought that was what was causing it to start hard. I got out to my fishing spot fine, but when I got ready to return home it decided it didn’t want to start again. I messed around with it again and it finally started again. I took it home and parked it for the winter. This spring I decided to do some maintenance on it to keep from being stranded. One of the spark plugs had been cross threaded prior to me owning it, so I removed the head that it repaired and installed it with a new head gasket. I replaced the gas can, gas link, and rebuilt the carburetor. I set the idle adjustment to 1-1/2 turns out and started her up. It took a few cranks to pull the fuel through the freshly rebuilt carb, but after a few cranks it fired up and idled rough. I adjusted the throttle adjustment, which helped it idle better, but when I rolled on the gas it hesitated and stalled. I started it back up and found the same problem after applying the gas it stalls. I removed the plugs Verified that I was getting spark on both, which I was. They didn’t appear to be wet, so I reinstalled them and tried it again. Same problem it starts, but stalls when gas is applied. Any suggestions as to what I should look at? I thught about taking the carb apart again, but when i did the rebuild on it the first time it seemed to be in really good shape.

Thanks,

Vox

Re: motor doesn t like it when i give it gas

Hi Vox, I'm an amateur when it comes to problem solving really but I've had a similar experience so I thought I'd let you know. We sent our motors off for servicing at the end of the season so they came back brand spanking and I started experiencing exactly the same problem as it seems you are. The motor idles at lower revs and either stalls or doesn't pick up when throttle is applied right?
Try putting some revs on without having the motor in gear at the dockside or at anchor before you head off in order to warm it up (pull out your control lever first if it is single lever control). If you're careful you may be able to do the same in gear but be sure to open the throttle very gradually because of the extra strain. You'll eventually notice the motor to start behaving as normal. If you can, blast around at WOT for a bit to really get the motor warmed up and it'll be fine. Ours don't have the problem anymore and we've done nothing to them since the service so my advice is sit tight and keep running it. All the best

p.s. 2 things.
1.I expect this post will be moved by a moderator to the Mariner/Merc forum
2. Someone who know's what they're talking about will answer you soon!

Thanks Diem for the input. I'll give it a try. Your right should have posted this under Merc.
